Hey everyone, my name is Eryk Chamberlin and I am an origami enthusiast. Over the last few years I have been trying to find a way to monetize this passion, but there are many roadblocks. I don't necessarily feel so good about selling other peoples models like I used to. See, I figured more I was selling my labor more than I was selling the design, but for many artists, these models are personal and likely a source of income for them. Traditional models are certainly up for grabs, and dead artists are still grey to me, so what else should I try?
A few months back I ordered some fairly expensive paper, a black Lokta paper that has a beautiful sheen and soft texture. When I first opened the package I was absolutely in love with it and my first fold (Love Origami's Dragon) was great! However, when I went on to my next fold I noticed the paper wasn't perfectly square, each piece was 2mm off. Now, I know that seems picky, but 2mm is quite an amount when you are going for a precise fold.
Point is, I went to a premium shop online instead of amazon, paid roughly 5x the cost per sheet (about 60 cents per sheet!) and got and entire set of paper that I had to recut to make even.
I honestly expected better, and over the next few months I am going to try and deliver better. I have been browsing manufacturers in several countries over the last week, along with tools and supplies for cutting and printing. I want to offer the same luxury papers, with more accuracy, more shapes, and more patterns. I want to give perfect squares for the best of artists, hexagons and pentagons for tessellation enthusiasts, and I even have ideas for pre-creasing grids for tessellations.
So stay tuned here, I am going to try and blog my journey as much as possible. Be sure to check out my Instagram as well.
